William F. Nolan Short Fiction:
First Publications 1952-2004

A listing by John Anthony Miller

Here I have included William F. Nolan's short fiction from the period 1952 to 2004. The famous horror novelist, Dean Koontz has called William F. Nolan "a master of the short form" and, testifying to this,  Nolan  has seen his fiction printed in many prestige anthologies including:  Best New Horror, Year's Best SF, Best Motor Racing Stories, Year's Best Fantasy, Best of  The West, Year's Best Horror Stories, Best Detective Stories of The Year, Best From Playboy, Best of Cemetery Dance, Best of Whispers,. Best of Weird Tales, Masters of Darkness, Modern Masters of Horror, Year's Finest Crime and Mystery StoriesNew Masterpieces of Horror, Great Noir Fiction, A Treasury of Boxing Stories, and Great Tales of Horror and the Supernatural plus many others. In fact, Nolan's fiction has been selected for some 215 anthologies (with his non-fiction included in 80 more.) Certainly, this has to be some kind of record.

This present listing  includes all first printings, whether in magazines or books. Reprints are excluded, but alternate printed story titles are listed. Collected stories are indicated. If a story appears in more than one Nolan collection, only the first collection is listed. Anthologies are listed only when they represent a first printing. This present listing includes 155  stories, from short-shorts to novellas. No novels are included. You can view them in the "Books" link that I have at the top of this page. Truly this is an amazing output of this  prolific and diverse  author.

Below are listed, in alphabetical order, the titles, and the date of publication.
