Erle Stanley Gardner's
Ventura Law Books |
| Below is portion of the over 2000 books in the
law library that Erle Stanley Gardner used while he was practicing law
in Ventura, CA. We came across these books by sheer chance. Even though
it was known in the city of Ventura that we were interested in any
ephemera pertaining to Erle Stanley Gardner, this set of books from his
old law office was destined to be on its way to San Francisco in a deal
by a local book dealer. I stopped by the bookshop and the owner casually
told me about the books and the pending sale. I told the owner we were
interested should the deal not go through. The Gods were kind to us that
week and the deal fell through and we obtained the books for some
thousands of dollars. To this end I can thank Keith and Joan Burns for
their contribution to preserving history. Some books were
stamped with the firm Gardner was with, shown below. This is the
complete set that Gardner used, and you can bet that he went through
each one of these books personally in handling his cases while he was
practicing law in Ventura and Oxnard, CA. In turn, just think about
this: these books played and instrumental part in the formation of the
character known as Perry Mason. Interesting, isn't it ? Glad we
were there to rescue these from oblivion or some swap meet. Even storing
these books has been expensive. The photos below are the very first time
that they have ever been shown. You are fortunate to see these! - John
